COLUMN: COMMUNION MEDITATION

Memorial Day
 by Jeff A. Jenkins

A number of outstanding articles have come through my
email today reminding me that Monday is Memorial Day.

Some of them speak of how we should remember our
military personnel who have given their lives in the
defense of our freedom.

Some speak of those who lost their lives in wars long
ago. Others speak of our men and women who have lost
their lives in the war in Iraq.

It is fitting and proper that we pay tribute to those
who have made our freedoms possible. It has been stated
many times, "Freedom isn't Free."

The cost of the freedom that we enjoy is the blood of
men and women who loved our nation. On Monday, Memorial
Day gatherings will take place in towns and cities
throughout the country.

One day before celebrating Memorial Day, another very
special memorial service will take place. Christians
all around the world will stop and give thanks for the
freedoms we have in Christ.

The greatest freedom we have in this life is freedom
from sin. In the book of Romans, Paul discusses the
freedom we have. "...having been freed from sin, you
became slaves to righteousness" (Romans 6:18).

Just a few verses later, he repeats the thought, "But
now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you
derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and
the outcome, eternal life" (Romans 6:22).

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has
set you free from the law of sin and death" (Romans
8:2).

What is true of our national freedom is also true of
our spiritual freedom. The spiritual freedoms we enjoy
are not free. They have borne the price of blood.

This time it is the blood of only one man. Our freedoms
were paid for with the blood of Jesus Christ (1
Corinthians 6:20; 1 Peter 1:18-19).

May God help us never forget to give thanks to him for
the wonderful freedoms that are ours!
